Located at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Denver is one of America's most beautiful and most fun cities. And it's a lively city with a great love of the outdoors. Down every Denver street there are mountain panoramas. Discover sports stadiums, three hundred restaurants, bars and brewpubs, a restored historic district, museums, galleries, shopping, performing arts and more. Plus it's a great gateway to all that Colorado has to offer.
Not everyone came to Colorado seeking gold. Other minerals played an important part in the state's history, as you'll discover in Leadville. And at 10,152 feet, it’s the United State's highest incorporated city. Just over 30kms from the town of Leadville at the base of Independence Pass is the historic Twin Lakes area, where you’ll find world-class fishing and some of Colorado's most spectacular lake and peak scenery.
Buena Vista, Spanish for “good view,” is nestled at the foot of the Continental Divide. It is the sort of community most people only dream of. The hardworking, quiet people who have always resided in this area are a large part of what has made this town a great place to live and play. Buena Vista is considered by many to be the capital of whitewater rafting for the United States, with the Arkansas River adjacent to town. A new expansion to the South Main River Park makes it the longest whitewater park of its kind in the country.
Historic Gunnison is a city which feels like a cattleman's town - the kind of place where you don't feel like a tourist as much as somebody visiting the folks. From there you can ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Gold brought many of the first settlers to Durango, in the Animas River Valley of Colorado. Trains were essential transportation of the day, bringing supplies in and gold ore out. Suffice it to say, if it can be done outdoors, it can be done in Durango. This is a huge mountain biking community and there is top-notch whitewater rafting on the nearby Piedras, Animas and Dolores rivers. If you like fishing, bring your pole. Backpacking and camping are prime activities - or you can rent a cabin and spend lazy days on a high mountain lake.
From Durango you can explore the archaeological wonder of Mesa Verde – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mesa Verde National Park is America’s premier archaeological wonder. Fourteen centuries of history are displayed there. Mesa Verde offers an excellent opportunity to see and experience the life of the Ancestral Pueblo people. Spectacular cliff dwellings and mesa-top villages were built between A.D. 450 and 1300, when people migrated to the area.
